Overview and Objectives In this class, we will learn and practice reading, listening, and writing strategies. This will range from reading books, to writing fiction and essays, to grammar. Some of the class will review techniques that students already know at their grade level, but then we will build on them and practice them to become better readers and writers for future class and life activities.
Goals
Elements of Literature, Fourth Course, Holt, Rinehart and Winston
Daily schedule
Each 90-minute period will generally be broken down into different activities, including quick writes, vocabulary building, literature (reading and writing), and grammar practice. If you do not come to class it will be extremely difficult to be successful. Class time is the time when everything is explained and practiced. It is the time given to you to learn. There will be time to work as an entire class, in groups, and individually.

3. Do not inhibit any one else’s learning.
4. Follow school rules.
Requirements for class:
· Class notebook

Tardies According to the school’s tardy policy, if you are tardy three times to class, on the fourth tardy you will be written a tardy referral, asked to sign it, and then complete lunch detention the next day. Failure to attend lunch detention will result in one to three days of out of school suspension. Every tardy after the fourth tardy will result in a lunch detention. If you have to stay after in a class, get a pass from that teacher if you don’t want a tardy referral.
Absences/Missing tests and quizzes
According to the school handbook, if you have more than 10 absences, you fail my course. Grades will be posted on my bulletin board weekly. You are responsible for keeping track of what you are missing. If you have an EXCUSED absence from class, you can make up the work for the missed day. It is up to you to ask for the missed work the next time you return. The assignment is then DUE THE NEXT CLASS WE MEET. No late papers are accepted. You MUST NOT interrupt class to ask for the work. You need to ask before class, after class or after school. If you miss a test, presentation or essay due date, you must make arrangements with me in advance to make it up. If there is an emergency, please talk to me.
Journals
Each student is required to keep a notebook that is used only for this class. The student is responsible for keeping track of his/her notebook. We write in our journals every day, so you must bring it with you every day. Journals will be checked every other week. There is a running log of the journals on the board to help you keep track. Each entry must be one paragraph long, unless otherwise instructed. You can receive extra credit if every journal assignment is completed satisfactorily.
Final Note In this classroom, we learn! It is a team effort, and it is up to each of us to bring our best game forward.
